Megasonic cleaning: cleaning with microbubbles

A well-known application of acoustic cavitation is ultrasonic or megasonic cleaning. However, exactly how dirt or particles are removed from an object is still poorly understood. In this project we aim to clarify the cleaning mechanism by relating nano-particle removal with microbubble dynamics induced boundary layer flow.

Figure 1: (a) Frames from a high-speed movie showing the top-view of an ultrasound driven microbubble in contact with a solid wall. (b) Diameter-time curve and (c) transmitted light intensity in the center of the bubble.
