Ultrasound contrast agents

Ultrasound contrast agents are used in echocardiography to enhance the contrast in cardiac perfusion images. These agents consist of micron-sized gas bubbles coated with a polymer or lipid coating. The interaction between these microbubbles and high-frequency ultrasound is studied by acoustical and optical means. A high-speed imaging system with a frame rate of upto 25 million frames per second is used to visualize bubble oscillations, non-linear responses and in some cases bubble collapse. The latter process is exploited for diagnostic and therapeutic use of a new class of contrast agents.
